Our Home Plymouth: ‘Curious About British Art Show 9’ was a co-creation project working with participants from the Plymouth and Devon Racial Equality Council Women’s Collective to explore notions of home and belonging as inspired by archive film from The Box’s collection.

For many during this project, we underwent a journey of discovery through origins, childhood memories from the four corners of the world (including, South Asia, South East Asia, Africa, New Zealand and the Middle East), and we celebrated the commonality of choosing Plymouth as our new home. The project unearthed new stories, using archive film in conversation with memory, juxtaposing images quintessentially British with memories from afar, representing different lived experiences and commonality.

Taking the ‘British Art Show 9’ exhibition as a starting point while it was on display across the Plymouth in late 2022, ‘Our Home Plymouth’ screened in conversation with the exhibitions, interacting with the show’s themes of healing, care and reparative history; tactics for togetherness; and imagining new futures. The project was part of the BFI’s Curious Season and created in collaboration with The Box, Plymouth Arts Cinema, BFI FAN and Film Hub North.
